1. About This Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how LEGAL DOOR LLC (“LegalDoor,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, discloses, and retains personal information through its website, applications, AI assistant, and related services (the “Service”). It covers visitors, individuals and businesses using the Service, attorneys, law firms, and their authorized personnel. It also applies to new Service features, subject to any additional privacy notice provided for those features.
This Policy does not cover personal information processed for LegalDoor’s recruitment, hiring, or employment activities.
LegalDoor provides technology for attorney search and business formation and filing assistance. LegalDoor itself is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice or representation.
U.S. operations. LegalDoor is based in California and offers services concerning U.S. legal matters and businesses. Personal information may be stored, accessed, or processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers or authorized personnel operate. Accessing the Service from another country may involve transferring your information to the United States. Applicable privacy rights are described in Section 14.
2. Attorney Relationships and Confidentiality
Using the Service, including the AI assistant, does not establish an attorney-client relationship with LegalDoor. Communications with the AI assistant do not, by themselves, create attorney-client privilege.
Any attorney-client relationship is between you and the attorney you choose to engage. Information or communications shared with an attorney may be subject to confidentiality, attorney-client privilege, or other legal protections depending on the circumstances and applicable law.
3. Information We Collect
The personal information we collect varies according to the features you use, the services you request, and your interactions with LegalDoor.
3.1 Information you provide
We collect information you provide when using the Service, whether on your own behalf or on behalf of another person or entity. The categories below describe the information you may provide.
- Account and profile information, including your name, email address, phone number, and other information you provide to create or manage an account or profile.
- Inquiry, messaging, and scheduling information, including details you provide about your matter, attorneys or practice areas you are interested in, messages exchanged with attorneys through the Service, and consultations or appointments scheduled through the Service.
We retain text messages and other communications you send to LegalDoor. We may record telephone calls with LegalDoor to handle your requests, evaluate service quality, and train our staff. Before recording begins, we provide notice and obtain any consent required by applicable law.
- AI assistant inputs and outputs, including information you submit to the AI assistant, your conversations with it, and summaries it generates (see Section 4).
- Business and filing information. Information submitted for formation, filing, registered-agent, mail, virtual-address, and related services, as described in Section 5.
- Content you submit. Reviews, ratings, profile content, community and marketplace posts, and other material you provide through the Service. Visibility depends on the feature and access settings, as described in Section 11.
- Attorney and firm information. Professional profiles, practice areas, licensing and credentials, insurance information, billing and subscription details, and advertising preferences and purchases. Verification, billing, and administrative information may be used without appearing in a public profile.
- Attorney verification information. We may request photo identification, licensing records, or supporting documents relevant to verifying an attorney’s identity, credentials, business address, or firm affiliation. We use these materials to conduct verification, resolve discrepancies, and help prevent impersonation and fraud.
- Payment information. Payments for services and subscriptions are handled by a third-party payment processor. We do not store full payment card numbers.
- Other submissions. We collect information you provide in surveys, support requests, and other communications with LegalDoor.
3.2 Information collected automatically
We collect IP addresses and other device and usage information, including browser and device type, pages viewed, and links clicked, when you use the Service, including through cookies and similar technologies. We may use your IP address to estimate your general location, such as your state. We use location information you provide or this estimate to display attorney profiles relevant to that location and your search criteria. You decide which attorneys to contact.
3.3 Information from other sources
We may receive information about you from another person using the Service, including someone submitting information on behalf of a business, law firm, or other organization. This may include your contact details, role, or ownership information supplied for a requested service.
We use public licensing records to maintain attorney profiles and verify professional information. These checks do not independently verify every profile statement. Attorneys may request corrections under Section 20.
We may also receive information from service providers that support the Service, such as analytics and payment providers. If you choose to create or access an account using a third-party sign-in provider, such as Google, Apple, or Microsoft, we may receive limited account information from that provider, such as your name and email address.
3.4 Categories of personal information
Some state privacy laws describe personal information using standard categories. Using those categories, the information we collect may include: identifiers, such as your name, email address, phone number, and IP address; commercial information, such as the products and services you buy or ask about; internet or network activity, such as how you interact with the Service; approximate geolocation derived from your IP address; professional or employment information, mainly for attorneys and firms, such as practice and licensing details; audio and visual information, including recorded calls, AI audio submissions, and uploaded identification documents; sensitive personal information, such as a Social Security number, ITIN, or other government identifier you provide in connection with a filing or attorney verification; and other information you choose to provide that may be sensitive in nature.
We collect these categories from the sources described above, and we may disclose them to service providers, filing and payment providers, attorneys you choose to contact, analytics providers, and others described in Section 7. Section 8 describes advertising and analytics practices and related choices.
4. The AI Assistant
The AI assistant provides general information and administrative assistance, including helping users search attorney profiles. It does not provide legal advice. Section 2 addresses attorney relationships and confidentiality.
Attorney search. You may use search filters or the AI assistant to identify search criteria and display relevant profiles. Displaying a profile is not certification of an attorney’s qualifications or a guarantee of suitability or results. You choose whom to contact.
Attorney inquiries. We share inquiry information, including search criteria and, with your authorization, an AI-generated summary of the relevant conversation, with each attorney you choose to contact. Summaries are sent without your preview and may contain errors or omit context. We may reuse a summary when you choose additional attorneys for the same matter. Section 7 describes access by authorized attorney personnel.
Voice features. We collect and retain audio submitted to the AI assistant and resulting transcripts to process requests and provide the feature. We provide recording notice and obtain any consent required by law before recording begins. Section 13 describes retention.
AI providers and use. Third-party AI providers process inputs and generate responses for the assistant. We process assistant interactions to respond to requests and operate, monitor, secure, and evaluate the Service. We do not use AI conversations, audio, or transcripts to train general-purpose AI models or authorize our AI providers to do so. Submit only information relevant to your request that you are authorized to disclose.
5. Business Formation, Filing, and Related Services
If you use LegalDoor for a business formation, filing, or related service, we collect the information needed to prepare, submit, or manage that service. This may include business names; names and addresses of owners, members, officers, registered agents, or other authorized persons; ownership information; and tax or identification numbers such as an SSN, ITIN, or EIN. Depending on the service you request, we may also collect information about your personal circumstances, business activities, or tax status to the extent reasonably necessary to prepare or complete that service or meet applicable filing requirements.
Related services include entity changes, registrations, and tax identification or election filings.
Depending on the service and jurisdiction, LegalDoor may prepare or submit a filing directly or may use third-party filing, incorporation, registered agent, mail, virtual-address, or other service providers. We share with those providers the information reasonably necessary to complete or provide the service you request.
Government filings and public records. Information is submitted to government agencies or filing authorities to complete requested services. Depending on the filing and applicable rules, information may become publicly accessible. Account deletion does not remove government records, as explained in Section 13.
6. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Operate, maintain, and secure the Service and manage accounts;
- Let you submit inquiries and contact the attorney(s) you choose;
- Provide the AI assistant and business formation, filing, and related services;
- Publish profiles, ratings, reviews, and advertising;
- Improve, develop, and personalize the Service, including analyzing usage and improving our search, ranking, and other features;
- Send service messages and, where permitted, marketing communications;
- Advertise our own services and measure how that advertising performs;
- Detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, abuse, and security issues; and
- Comply with law and enforce our Terms.
If we intend to use personal information for a materially different purpose that is not covered by this Policy, we will provide any additional notice and obtain any consent required by applicable law before that use.
7. How We Share Information
- Selected attorneys. We disclose inquiry information and any AI-generated summary to the attorneys you choose to contact. Personnel authorized to assist those attorneys may also access the information. Attorneys handle received information under their own privacy practices and applicable legal and professional obligations.
- AI providers. Providers supporting the assistant process information as described in Section 4.
- Filing and incorporation providers. We disclose information needed by providers to prepare, submit, or manage filings and related services you request, as described in Section 5.
- Registered-agent and other providers. We disclose information needed to deliver registered-agent, mail, virtual-address, and related services you request.
- Payment providers. Information needed to process payments for the services you purchase is handled by payment providers.
- Service providers. We disclose information needed by vendors to host, operate, or support the Service. Their processing is governed by applicable agreements and law. Section 18 addresses third-party services that handle information for their own purposes.
- Analytics providers. We disclose device and usage information to providers that help us understand and improve the Service, as described in Sections 3.2, 8, and 15.
- Legal and safety disclosures. We may disclose information to comply with law or legal process, or when we reasonably believe disclosure is necessary to address fraud, unlawful activity, security threats, or risks to rights or safety.
- Business transactions. Information may be disclosed or transferred in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, subject to applicable privacy requirements.
- Aggregated or de-identified information. We may use or disclose information that cannot reasonably be linked to an individual, subject to applicable restrictions on its use and re-identification.
8. Advertising and Analytics
Advertising and analytics. We may use third-party services to promote LegalDoor and understand how visitors use the Service. Depending on the tools enabled, these services may process device identifiers and usage information through cookies or similar technologies. We provide applicable notices and choices as required by law.
Your controls. You can manage non-essential cookies as described in Section 15 and exercise applicable privacy rights through the contact details in Section 20. Before introducing practices that constitute a sale of personal information or sharing for targeted advertising, we will update our disclosures and provide any legally required choices.
Do Not Track. Some web browsers let you turn on a “Do Not Track” (DNT) setting. Because the industry has not agreed on a single standard for how a site should respond to DNT, we do not currently take action based on DNT signals.
9. Communications
Service communications. LegalDoor and users you interact with may communicate with you through the Service or by email, telephone, or text concerning inquiries, consultations, accounts, filings, or requested services.
Workspace communications. We process messages exchanged through the workspace and any matter-status updates users or attorneys choose to submit. Users may instead continue their communications outside LegalDoor; Section 18 addresses external consultations.
Text messages. We obtain consent for the types of texts identified when you enroll, such as inquiry, appointment, account, or service updates. Marketing texts require separate consent, and marketing consent is not a condition of using the Service. Reply STOP to withdraw SMS consent. We stop messages covered by that opt-out, apart from a permitted confirmation. We retain messaging preferences and consent records to administer the service and honor your choices. We retain proof of SMS consent at least until the recipient withdraws consent and longer as needed to meet applicable legal requirements. SMS opt-in information is not sold or shared for another party’s marketing; it may be provided to messaging providers as needed to deliver texts and manage consent.
Text messaging. If you opt in to receive text messages, we use your mobile number only to send the messages you requested. No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Text messaging originator opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third parties. Information sharing with subcontractors in support services, such as customer service or our messaging provider, is permitted. You can opt out at any time by replying STOP.
Marketing email. We send marketing email with consent and an unsubscribe option. You may also contact us under Section 20 to withdraw marketing consent. Opting out of marketing does not prevent necessary service communications through other permitted channels.
10. Attorney Customer Data; Our Role
LegalDoor handles information for its own platform functions, including account administration, attorney search, security, and service communications. Where we process client or prospective-client information on an attorney’s or firm’s behalf, that processing is subject to applicable agreements and law. Attorneys and firms are responsible for having authority to provide information and for complying with their professional and confidentiality obligations.
11. Public Content, Community, and Information You Share With Others
Reviews, ratings, Community posts, and other content you choose to make public may be visible to anyone, including people who browse the Service without an account. Other content may be available only to registered users, subscribers, members, or other authorized users, depending on the feature and applicable access settings.
Public content may appear with your username or display name and may be indexed, copied, or retained by others. Copies outside LegalDoor can remain available after you delete the original content or close your account. Avoid including information you intend to keep confidential in public posts.
Submitting a review requires signing in. Reviewers may display their username or choose “Anonymous.” When “Anonymous” is selected, LegalDoor does not display the reviewer’s username alongside the review but retains its association with the reviewer’s account. Information included in the review itself may still identify the reviewer.
We process content you post to host, display, and provide the features through which you share it. Rights and permissions relating to that content are addressed in the applicable Terms of Service.
Restricted sharing. Messages and content shared in restricted areas are available to the recipients or users permitted to access those areas. Share confidential, privileged, or client-related information only when you have the required authority and comply with applicable professional obligations. Recipients may retain their own copies.
12. Sensitive Personal Information
Sensitive information may be included in filing information, attorney-verification documents, or details you choose to provide about a legal matter, as described in Sections 3 through 5.
You are not required to provide a Social Security number or ITIN merely to search for attorneys.
We collect, use, and disclose sensitive information only as reasonably necessary to provide the services you request and as otherwise described in this Policy. We do not use sensitive information to infer characteristics about you, and we do not sell sensitive information.
13. Data Retention
We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the requested services and fulfill the purposes described in this Policy. Retention depends on the type and sensitivity of the information, the nature of the service, and applicable legal, security, and recordkeeping needs. These criteria apply to call recordings, contact form submissions, text messages, SMS consent and opt-out records, AI audio and transcripts, verification documents, and account and filing records. We delete or de-identify information when it is no longer reasonably needed, subject to applicable legal requirements. We address deletion requests as described in Section 14.
Closing your account does not automatically remove inquiries or messages previously shared with an attorney from that attorney’s LegalDoor workspace. Requests to delete that information are handled under this Policy and applicable law, including any permitted or required retention.
Third-party records. Closing an account or canceling a service does not automatically erase records that fulfillment providers retain for lawful purposes, including legal and recordkeeping obligations. Submit deletion requests to LegalDoor under Section 20; we will address them and notify relevant providers as required by law.
Account deletion does not automatically erase copies independently retained by attorneys outside the Service, including downloaded records or email correspondence. Those attorneys handle their records under applicable legal and professional obligations. Information in government filings remains subject to the relevant authority’s retention and access rules.
14. Your Privacy Choices and Rights
Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have rights to confirm whether we process your personal information; access, correct, or delete it; obtain a portable copy; and opt out of sale, targeted advertising, or certain profiling. You may also have rights to limit particular uses of sensitive information, restrict or object to processing, or withdraw consent where processing relies on consent. These rights are subject to applicable conditions and exceptions.
We respond within applicable legal deadlines and do not unlawfully discriminate against individuals who exercise privacy rights.
Submitting a request. Use the contact details in Section 20, whether or not you have an account. Where permitted by law, an authorized agent may act for you. We may request information reasonably necessary to verify identity or authority when verification is appropriate for the request. If we decline a request, we will explain the reason as required by law.
Appeals and complaints. Where applicable law provides an appeal right, contact us under Section 20 to request review of a denial. We respond within the applicable deadline and provide information about further recourse where required. You may also raise privacy concerns with the regulator or supervisory authority responsible for enforcing your applicable privacy rights.
15. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
Cookies and similar technologies support Service functionality, preferences, and usage measurement. Browser identifiers may help recognize returning visitors and preserve activity between visits, including before account creation. Such identifiers may be personal information even without a name. We obtain consent for non-essential cookies where required by law. Browser settings can limit cookies, although some features may be affected.
Cookie choices. Use the cookie preferences available through the Service to manage non-essential cookies. Necessary cookies support core functionality. We honor applicable opt-out preference signals, including Global Privacy Control, where required by law. These signals are distinct from the Do Not Track setting addressed in Section 8.
16. Security
We maintain administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect personal information, taking into account its sensitivity and the risks associated with its processing. Although these measures help protect your information, no system for transmitting or storing information is completely secure. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials.
If you suspect unauthorized access to your account or misuse of your personal information, contact us using the details in Section 20.
17. Children’s Privacy
The Service is intended for users aged 18 or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children using the Service. If you believe a child has submitted information, contact us under Section 20 so we can investigate and take appropriate action, including deletion where required.
18. Third-Party Links and Services
The Service may link to or integrate with services operated by other organizations. Their privacy notices explain information they process for their own purposes. This Policy continues to apply to LegalDoor’s handling of information, including processing performed on our behalf.
Attorneys and users may arrange consultations through third-party conferencing services using their own accounts. LegalDoor may process meeting links or scheduling information handled through the Service, but does not receive or retain the audio, video, or transcripts of those external consultations. Recording by participants or the conferencing provider is governed by applicable law and the relevant provider’s terms and privacy notice.
19. Additional Privacy Notices, Consents, and Data Terms
Additional notices may apply to particular features or jurisdictions. We identify them when relevant and provide any separate notice or consent required by law. If a program involving personal information requires a financial-incentive notice, we provide it before enrollment.
20. Changes to This Policy and How to Contact Us
We may update this Policy as our practices change. We will revise the effective date and provide additional notice and obtain consent where required by applicable law. Continued use of the Service does not replace consent that the law requires us to obtain separately.
To ask a question about this Privacy Policy or submit a request concerning your personal information, contact LegalDoor at privacy@legaldoor.com.
